Hankow, March 23, TILITARY HEADQUARTERS received a telephone call this morning, from the commander of the Chinese forces on the Tientsin-Pukow Rallway tront, declaring that the Japanese forces were completely routed and the Chinese forces are at pre- sent advancing on all fronts.

} GENERAL TANG ENG-PO; commander of the Fourth Army, also telephoned from the field headquarters at Talerchwang, on the north bank of the Grand Canal, stating that a Chinese flying column reoccupied Lincheng late yesterday afternoon. The railway Unes northward of the city were cut off and Japanese troops. be- tween Llacheng and Hanchwang, were forced to retreat castward in order to escape being entirely surrounded.

It is also claimed that Japanese forces, which hitherto had been attacking Lingyl, have started a general retreat in the direction of Chuhsten owing to the foregoing developments.

Meanwhile, to the west the same tale of victories is "reported with the Chinese now outside the walls of Taining and expecting to enter there today.

Very heavy fighting in these operations is stated to have occurred outside Lincheng, where the op- posing forces resorted to no less than twelve bayonet charges in 24 hours.
