JAPAN HAS NO CASE IN ASIA
Sunday, March 27, 1938.
It is now some six and a half years since Japanese officials, diplomats, bustnessmen, journalists and plain propagandists first · attempted to present Japan's case in Asta, but the ineptitude of the majority of these writers and speakers has been so extraordinary, and their statements so rash, provocative and open to question that Between them they have succeeded in convincing the world in general that Japan has no case at all.
The Japanese have made too lavish use of dark colours in painting pictures of the Chinese, and too little willingness, of course on the part of the Japanese, to admit that they themselves have sometimes
been guilty of making mistakes.
There is not the slightest doubt that public opinion in the Occident in the main now presents a "united front in, condemning Japan's undeclared war against China. As a result of this the Japanese press has been quick to seize every opportunity to depict the majority of the Western powers as being associated in a conspiracy not only to assist China at the expense of Japan but also in some indirect way to bring about the downfall of Japan herself.

THE TIDE IS TURNING
The
Sino-Japanese
war
has
Japan had a few friends before she embarked on the present campaign. There are still some Western powers who declare that their friendship with her has not been affected by the trend of events, but the sincerity of these statements is doubtful In any case it is impossible for even the best of Japan's friends to defend her as long as this press campaign of calumny and vituperation is in progress. for the accusations the Japanese press are making are so obviously composed of a tissue of falsehoods.
We have, of course, long since been used to this from the Japanese but it is nevertheless annoying to read of staternents that are con- cocted with the idea of misleading the world. It is an insult to one's intelligence for the Japanese to even dare to hope that these state- ments will be read and "swallowed us the gospel truth.
In a country where everybody claims to be almost super-human. it is surprising that they are so easily led-or perhaps misted would be the more appropriate word-by a handful of militarists determined to have their own way, cost what it may,
in
The Japanese people have followed blindly and it is costing them more dearly, than they would care to admit even to themselves. the early stages of the war it was only their internal trade which suffered but as their ruthless murder of innocent civilians continued world opinion became shocked to such an extent that slowly but surely the will to regard Japan as an outcast from the civilised world made itself felt.
Today opinion against Japan is so bitter that her foreign trade is greatly affected and if Japan is to regain this loss, even in a small measure, her only way to do so would be to cease immediately her present campaign and return, unconditionally, to China what is right- fully hera.
་
China, it has been stated time and time again, will fight to the bitter end. Why should she not do so when she has justice on her side? China never wanted this war. It was forced upon her at a time when all the country's resources were concentrated on putting her own house in order-fighting the Communist menace, stamping out the drug traffic that Japan so cleverly introduced into the country, and improving the roads and communications thoughout the country. China took it quietly when Japan walked in and pegged her claim in Manchuria. Japan thought that history would repeat itelf and that it only required a few shots, fred at random, for her to annex a further slice of North China. But here Japan erred. Rather than suffer any more indignity. China put aside all plans of rehabilitation and reconstruction and took up arms to repel, the invader, and much to the latter's surprise she is making a thoroughly good job of it.
China's forces" today are better organised and better equipped than at the outset of the present hostilities, and. 1 Japan found it dimcult then to "beat Chipa to her knees," her job is ten times more difficult today. For well-righ nine months now China has been fighting as one against a neighbour who, from time immemorial, has cast covetous eyes on the mainland.
Under the inspiring leadership of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, China is going from strength to strength and reports from the various fronts received daily tell us that, go far from making any progresa, Japan's forces in China are finding it most difficult to hold what little territory they managed to take in the early stages of the war.

We were quite impressed with. 'Zenc,' he has a striking appear- ance and his ease and delivery denote an artist. We liked his rope tricks very much and his razor stunt still has us flabbergasted.
The amateurs who endeavoured: --- to get by the Chairman's hook gave 113 a delightful interlude. There was a man who dia" "Äin't you ll;" and "Franky

HE the Governor was there with ja party on the second night. Per- haps it was his diguided presence, but we thought the artistes, each and every one, gave of his or her best.
To review what we heard last week, let us start with the week- end. The ZBW programmes were rather good, we thought. Madam Butterfly' during lunch time Bun- .. day helped us digest a delightful meal, and the St. Joseph's Choir was quite up to scratch on same evening.

We hear from very reliable sour- ces that there will be another orchestral concert at the Peninsula Hotel, to be given by the Royal Scots. This, of course is subject to confrmation. We shall give more details later.
