Rearranging The New Testament Books

GAP OF 30 YEARS

In the course of some work (which I have recently had to do I have had occasion to consider the dates of the various books of ! the New Testament, writes the

My particular conclusions are in no way Important, but I realised. for the first time the disadvan- tages of the arrangement with which we are familiar.

Perhaps I ought to apologise for drawing attention to anything so cbvious, but it is just possible that some of my readers have been as slow 15 I was to consider "the meaning of facts which they knew quite well:

There are very obvious advan- tages in putting the Gospel nar- ratives at the beginning, but to dp so obscures the very important and interesting fact that most of St. Paul's Epistles were written to men who had one of those nar- ratives before them. Agath the obvious contitast between the Gospel of St. John and the other three is unfairly heightened if we allów ourselves to forget that, for at least a quarter of a century be- tore that book appeared. St. Paul had been writing to the Colossians and the Ephesians in language quite as "developed" as his, and the author of the Epistle to the Hebrews had written those "great opening verses which we read on Christmas Day.

Again, there are clear reasons or grouping St. Paul's Epistles to- [gether. but none whatever for printing them, as we do, in an or der which makes no attempt at chronology. One is reminded of the arrangement, or lack of it, in the Koran, which is, said. I am not sure, with what truth. to have proceeded simply on the principle of the length of the particular

chapters.

WHEN "DISORDER" IS REALISED

There is no sort of doubt that the letters to the Thessalonians were written five or six years before that to the Romans, and some critics, with whom I myself agree place the Epistle to the Galatians, ear- Her still. Nor is there the least question that (IF we except the Pastoral Epistles) the letters to the Colossians and Ephesians re- present Paul's latest utterance. Has not the ordinary reader the right to have these elementary facts made plain to him, instead of being driven to a commentary? 1 feel rather ashamed of not knowing when or by whom the; present order of the New Testa- ment, books determined, though. as I have said, I have no great , respect for its principle. But I am still more ashamed of having taken so long to realise its bad- ness. When we have done so, all sorts of fascinating but unanswer- able problems confront us.

What. for* lastance. were the documents on which the Christian preachers relied? were the unknown authors who : gathered together the collections of sayings, parables от stories which were all they had to use for 30 years, after the Resur- rection? These are the questions which face snyone who attempts a research Into the origins of our Gospels.

These are abstract problems and beyond the capacity of the aver- age man; but there is one fact which he might be encouraged to grasp with firmness, and that is j that any preconceptions of date which our New Testament may give him are fundamentally false; St. Matthew has no more right to come first among the Gospels than the Romans among the Epistles- land, (more important though less {obvious) that at least six letters of St. Paul are the earliest Christian writings that we possess. The "gospel" came into the world 30 years-nore than a generation- before the Gospels.
