The problem which the yacht designer had to solve in this type of boat in its original form was very attractive. It was precisely the opposite, speaking colloquially.), retaining their present seny: to the old English theory of a W. Potter, from N. Stafford R.; racing yacht. The old-time idea E. Griffiths, from P.W. Vols.
of an English racing craft was to ROYAL ARMY "MEDICAL CORPS build a hull of a certain size or tonnage. say Ave tens or 30ft length. and then rig the yacht with as much racing sali as she could carry,
Prof. Ljungberg. of Sweden re- versed this problem. His idea was to agree to a certain size of sail área and then build the fastest possible full of any dimensions. size or tonnage, to be driven by it. The old problem was turned topsy- turvy!
INTERESTING PROBLEM
It was taken back for identifica- tion. Examination by experts revealed that the little ice-scarred piece of wood had accomplished what would seem an almost impos- sible feat that of drifting
through the Northwest passage at the "Top of the World".
The log was found to be black spruce and was more than one hundred years old before it Was uprooted.
Its original site was somewhere along the banks of the mighty Mackenzie or one of its tributaries. Somehow it found its way to the Arctic Ocean, and travelled around
the north side of Banks Island and Victoria Island via McCulre Strait, McClintock Channel and Franklin.

To prevent the construction, of "frenk" craft a number of limita- tions were included in the rules of the 30 square metre international class. The result of the limitations. of course, greatly modifies the original proplem. Only a restricted or limited form of hull must now be placed beneath the 30 square metres of sail area.
English yachtsmen, will be in terested, and I am sure not a little surprised, at the result of the "problem" when they see the new yachts. because they will see a very large hull placed beneath a very small area of sali.
A slx-metre yacht is 23-2411 water-line length and carries about 450 square feet of sali. The new 30 square metre class may run to 29 feet water-line length with 323 square feet of sail. But while a six-metre yacht is a heavy craft of four tons weight the 30 square metre will displace ap- proximately half that weight of salt water.

SAIL LIKE BIRD'S WING The Bermudian mainsall of the new class of yacht is even more Like a swift flying bird's wing than any sall commonly seen in this country, because it is very tall and narrow and the top of the mast is curve, permanently bent into a with the result that the main aall is shaped like the wing of a I swallow,
The Skerry cruiser type is cap- able of great speed and weather- Einess, but opinion is divided as to whether the elongated form of hull prove suited to the rough short seas of the west channel of the Solent. One attraction of the new class is that, although small, every boat has a cabin and conch-roof.
A. 30 square metre association has been formed. Mr. C. G. Hey- wood, chairman, Mr. George Wans- brough, 62, New Broadstreet, EC.. secretary, and Mr. Tom Thorny- croft, has been appointed repre- sentative of the Y.R.A. on the com- mittee. Bixteen yachts have ol- ready been bullt, or are building for the class for racing in British waters. The cost of the boats is about £800.
