London, March 12 Although outwardly calm, an undercurrent of considerable ner- Yousness is apparent in City circles following overnight developments in Central Europe.

With the Stock Exchange ob- serving its usual Saturday holiday. It was left to the foreign exchange market to reveal the extent of the prevailing anxiety.

In a session of very lively trad- ing the chief feature was provided by a sharp appreciation of the French franc.

FRANC BALLIES The "spot" rate rallied to 156,00 to the pound sterling compared with 158.25. last night, owing to substantial covering resulting from the formation of the new French Government, together with some repatriation of refugee funds, es- pecially from Switzerland.

On the other hand, the Ameri- can dollar, as a 'currency far re- moved from the ruling tension, met with keen demand and armed up in terms of most European cur- renclés.
