CRICKET NOTES

(Continued from Page 10)

VARSITY BATS DO WELL The Club-University game was remarkable for, the fact that, after having their bowlers beaten up to the tune of nearly 200 runs, the Undergrads not only did not iöse, but might conceivably have won had there been a little more time.

For the Club, Stokes and Wode house, both of whom have played for the seniors,, were in fine form and their half-century each con- tributed materially to the Club's total of 192, at which point they declared for the loss of only five wickets.

TSUI AND FONG The Varsity pwed practically everything to their opening bats. Isul and Fong, particularly the former, for their fine reply of 11 for. 8. Fong stayed while 50-odd runs were put on for the first wicket, and Tsul, although could get only Teoh and Hong Choy to stay with him, went on to score 89 before Stoker finally got past his defence.

na

It was a very good performance by a team which, though It possesses only one or two cut- standing players. counts Itself second to none in the matter of keenress and eagerness to learn. DEVASTATING BOWLERS The Police (Carey 60, Pope 38; Danbrowsky 22 not out and Oakley 17 not out) ran up 189 for 8 de- clared against Civil Service, which was far too good for the latter.

As a matter of fact, Carey's score alone was nearly suficient. the C.S. being dismissed for 87.

Baker and Pope were in de- vastating form with the ball, and

One of the draw-backs in aspir- ing tu be a cricket scribe 15 that there are occasions when one just can't shirk from making a forecast us to the results of matches. I am, frankly, fearful to attempt any prophecy of the outcome, of tomorrow's senior games, however. Of one thing I feel sure. Crai- gengower must beat the Club # they are to win the Shield. I say this because I am of the definite opinion that if it came to a play- off with either the "Indlans or Kowloon, they are lost.

II they do win. I think they will be all right. for Kowloon and the ER.C. will pro- bably share the points. Kowloon. of course, must "win before they cun have a look-in at all

The Club are making a number

of changes in the side "which so nearly lost to-and yet so nearly beat-the Indians last week. None of the Pearces are playing and Baines and Neve are coming in. One place is, as yet unfilled.

The big dangers to Craigen gower are, to my mind, Leckie and Neve. Both are great believers in that old 'axim "the best method of defence is attack." and a big score in a short time from either ur both of them is liable to ruin things for the Valleyites. In this regard it is nothing short of a alsadvantage for Craigengower to be playing on their own small ground. They are, I believe, turn- ing out the same eleven as did duty last week.

Regarding the other key match.

I can't quite see the Indians los- ing to Kowloon. On the other hand, I hardly think they will beat them.

They are turning out their re- gular side and, as usual, much will depend on A. H. Madar, Nazarin, Abbas. Kitchell, Minu and Ismail. There are also the veteran Arthur Rumjahn and young Arculli to fall back on, while M. P. Madar, Baker and A. M. Rum- Jahn must have some 30 years ex- perience of the game between them.

On paper. then. the Indians would appear to have little worry, but so many of them, unfortunate- ly, have the habit of all failing at

the same timele

Kowloon will also probably be at full strength. Teddy Fincher seems definitely to have struck form and there is, of course, Anderson, but neither can afford to fail as the rest are none too steady,

All in all, both should be great games, and I only wish I could see both throughout.

Anyhow, may the best team win the Shield.
