"A" UNIVERSAL

LANGUAGE

The subject of a universal lang" uage, which was debated in Hong Kong recently, has always been one of interest to the Catholic Church, as it has used the same official language for close on two thousand years.

The continued use of Latin throughout all parts of the world for such a long time is something ⚫quite without parallel and has proved conclusively, among other

things, the value of a universal means of communication. The ex- tent to which Latin is used in the Catholic Church in our day is not fully realised outside the Church.

Not merely is it the lar uage used in the ceremonies of the church, but it is the regular vehicle communication between the centre of the Church and all the outposts; it is language used by priests in the "Office," mainly consisting of readings

from

the

Scripture, which'occuples about an hour of their day every day; it is the language in which the studies for the priesthood are carried out; and it is the ordinary means of -Intercourse between priests when

those of different nationalities

meet.

The language that is used is not classical in quality-just as the English of newspapers is not that of Shakespeare-but It is correct · and has been proved by Iring experience to serve Its purpose excellently.
