"It's so like London. Just like coming out from the tube". sald Dick Manning, member of the Islington Corinthians football team, in a chat with me yesterday. THE TRIAL PLATE: DESERT CHIEF NOT STARTING?
BY “LAST QUARTER
All roads will lead to Happy Valley tomorrow when the Hong Kong Jockey Club commence their 1938 Annual Race Meeting with a programme of twelve events. The first saddling bell will be rung at 11 .. and the first race. The Foochow Cup, is timed to start at 11.30 am. The very even standard of ponies in the subscription griffins class alone will ensure excellent racing and everything points to a record meeting in regard to flelds, attendance and parl-mutnet.
It is difficult to correctly forecast the respective starters in the various events as owners are in- clined to withhold their declarations until the last moment, but from training indications and the book- ing of jockeys a fair idea may be obtained. In this article I will endeavour to comment on each race separately and give readers an idea as to the probable starters and the ponies worth following.
The Foochow Cup event is over 1 miles and as Liberty Bay appears to be his old self again and in condition, there is no need to look any further for the winner. Trentbridge should be second and Soldier of Honour, it started, may collect third place money. The Aeld here may be the smallest of the day as Liberty Bay's presence will scare away the majority of the "A" class contenders srid force them into either the China Btakes or the New Stables Flate later in the day.
We make our first acquaintance, seventh events, and until the draw; should also do well. In all, a very with the griffins of the year in the is available it is difficult to com-open event with prospects of a Malden Stakes but I believe the ment intelligently on the chances keen finish.
The THE WONG NEI CHONG STAKES field will not be truly representa- of the various contenders.

It would appear that the King of Sporis has to give pride of place to the Sport of Kings. The whole cricket league programme for to- morrow has been put back till March 12, the main reason, whether or not it is officially given, being, of course, the Annual Race Meeting. though the debut of the Islington Corinthians also has something to do with it.
This postponement is rather a pity. The league in both divisions is in a very interesting stage and everybody is or should be looking forward to a fighting finish. Putting back a whole block of matches thus will not add to keenness at the end
