South China Threat Exaggerated?

..

Canton, Feb. 7. The alarming reports in the Hong Kong newspapers hardly re- flect Canton's views regarding the latest Japanese threat to South

China.

The excitement which followed the recent proclamation of martial law throughout the city has died down considerably, though several rumours are still circulating one of which is to the effect that three

Japanese divisions have arrived from Formosa and may possibly out operations in South carry China before February 9.

General Wu Teh Chen, the Gov- ernor, told Reuter: "I have also heard this, but my information is that the situation has improved rather

otherwise." adding that the Japanese troops which landed at Chikiau Island yester day morning departed at 5 pm.

Other authoritative sources point put that these frequent bombard- ments and landings in Kwangtung are not to be interpreted as a ma- Jor offensive in South China.
