"LIFE OF EMILE ZOLA",

One of the greatest claims, to fame possessed by the Republic of France is that it was the birth- place and the homeland of Emile Zola, the immortal novelist. His name is to France what Shakes- peare's is to England.

And now, for the Arst time, Zola reaches the films, With Paul Munt in the name part, "The Life of Emile Zola," an immense pro- duction by Warner Bros. show ing at the Queen's Theatre today. There is a strong temptation, of course, to compare this epic dra- ma with the one that gained for Muni, last year, the Motion Pic- ture Academy's award for the best performance by an actor in 1938 "The Story of Louis Pas- tour."

It runs through the entire career of Zola. First he is seen ES L struggling 'young - writer, some times obliged to pawn even his shirt for bread. Then he meets the girl of the streets. "Nana" (Played by Erin O'Brien-Moore) whose life he depicts in a novel that earns him enormous suma and lifta hin to international fama.

But most of the story has to do with Zola's courageous defence of Captain Alfred Dreyfus, the army officer who was framed on a false charge of selling secrets to Ger- many, and, who was sent to the horrors of Devil's Island.

"HIGH FLYERS"

Contributing substantially to the support of Wheeler and Woolsey In "High Flyers," latest of their eccentric comedy concoctions, is the temperamental little Mexican Lupe Velez. seen above with Bert Wheeler. This picture opened at the Alhambra Theatre on Sunday Feb. Gih.
