Thief's Alleged Attempt To Open Fire

B.11 unarmed Chinese constable and his cousin in chasing armed men, was des cribed by Detective Sub-Inspector 1 B. Whant before Mr. K. Ed- wards at the Central Magistracy yesterday when Ng Kwok-ping- aged 38, was charged with robbery at No. 4 Tai On Terrace; attempt- ing to discharge a loaded revolver at Police Constable Yip Tin with" intent to do him grievous bodily Injury; unlawful possession of re- volver and five rounds of am- munition; and robbery and sault at No. 250 Hollywood Read. on January 22.

But the people in the street shouted "They are the men" and he turn- ed and gave chase, together with his cousin, who was with him. He was off duty at the time, and was unarmed.

He shouted to them to stop but they continued.. At the corner house. No. 30, first defendant dropped the basket which he was carrying.

Rounding the corner. the police- man and his companion found that the men had stopped and were facing them. The pursuers ran right up to the pursued and

The preliminary hearing of the case in which Fong Kim-fat, 19 years of age, is charged with rob- bery with violence, was begun be- for Mr. K: M. A. Barnett at the Kowloon Magistracy yesterday. The complainant was a woman, Chan Kwan-tal, aged 18 years.

Det.-Inspector A. E. Carey stated that about 7.15 pm on January 18, the complainant, on reaching the ground floor of her house, was accosted by the defendant who asked her if she remembered him, The complainant, not recollecting having met him before. replied in the negative, whereupon defen- dant asked her to accompany him to see a sick child. She went with him to 372.. Reclamation street. third floor, but on arrival there, defendant said that it was the wrong house and asked her to accompany him to another address in the same street.

Complainant's suspicions were aroused and she refused to accom- pany him and cried out for help. Defendant, it

was alleged, then pushed her on to the landing of the third floor, where they were ut the time, and after using violence robbed her or a leather purse containing 36 in local currency, a metal and jade ring, a necklace of wooden beads and three pairs of earrings. He then bolted.

Two days later, defendant was

arrested and on being searched was found to have in his posses- sion the ring and earrings in ques- tion. Defendant was taken to the Mongkok Folice Station where he was charged.

After evidence was taken. His Worship committed the defendant to stand trial at the Criminal Sessions.

Detective-Sergeant D.. Davies said the police went to Room 82, Tal Loi Boarding House, on January 29, acting on information received. There they found defendant lying on a bed, and the arms were hid- den under the mattress.

The man who had given the in- formation was also charged with this defendant but he pleaded not guilty and was discharged, as the police accepted his plea.

His Warships also recommended defendant for banishment.

The constable was blowing his. whistle continually and District watchmen joined in the chase.

Several Motor Mishaps

A six-year-old boy, named Li Mo- lo, was killed instantly when motor bus No. 601, on the No. 5 route, knocked him down and ran over his head at Queen's Road West near Centre Street, on Sunday.

Another boy, Li Ngau-chau, aged four, was sent to the Queen Mary Hospital with injuries to the thigh. after he had been knocked down by private motor car in Queen's Road Central.

Wong Lau-siu, nine-year-old boy, was sent to hospital with injuries caused by being knocked down by a taxi in Des Voeux Road Central,

Knocked down by the bumper of of a car in Bonham Strand, Chun Wal, 25, suffered face and leg in- juries, and was taken to the Queen Mary Hospital.

GAS-PROOF HOUSE DEMONSTRATED

In connection with the course of lectures on air raid precautions, the 'Medical Officer's house at the oid Government Civil Hospital, which has been equipped as a model gas- proof and splinter-proof house, was open to inspection by the public yesterday.

Two representatives of the Royal Engineers were in attendance from 5.30 to 7.30 p.m., explaining to the large number of people present the various uses of the apparatus em-

ployed and exhibited,

The main entrance to the room has been air-locked. This passage, about three feet in length is made of wood, the cracks being filled and pasted over with gas-proof paper. It was explained that during an attack each end of this passage should be covered with blankets saturated with oil and water, as curtains. With this arrangement,

· a person entering the room dropped the first curtain before raising the second, no gas could penetrate the air-locked entrance.

The windows have been protect- ed against splintering by having cellophane from cigarette packets pasted over them or by protective blanket shields.

Cracks between floor boards have been filled and pasted over with brown paper. The walls have been protected by sandbags.
