REMARKABLE PROGRESS MADE BY HONG KONG.

HIGHLY SATISFACTORY STATE OF FINANCIAL POSITION

Governor's Interest Big Source Of Encouragement

GROWTH IN MEMBERSHIP MAINTAINED

M

The extraordinarily rapid progress made by the Hong Kong Rifle Association is revealed in the re- port and statement of accounts which has just been approved by the Council

An increase in the individual membership is noted, this figure jumping from 469 on December 31, 1936 to 670 on December 31, 1937 while the amlated membership soared from 5,700 in 1936 to 7,500 in 1937. Entries at the "association" Prize Meeting, for individual squaded, team squaded and team events showed an average increase of 88 per cent and the profit on the Prize Meeting was $1,185.02 as agäfäärt $450, or an increase of 163 per cent.

One of the outstanding features of the financial year was that $7,62057 had been paid to the contractors for the cost of the clubhouse, in less than a year, leaving a brisace of only $3,- 545.37 and the balance sheet must afford great pleasure to all connected with the Association, as the assets shown on it have increased by 10 per cent to $11,702.69 while the profit on the year's working, at 33.308.89 is 133 per cent larger than that for the preceding year.

Extracts form the annual report, has presented a cash prize of $250, are given below:-

Where Are The Promoters?

Dear Sir, I read with consider- able interest the article by "Ex-" Welter in this morning's issue of the "Daily Press." I must say that I agree with him it is a great pity. that the sporting public of the Co- long are not better catered for in- sofar as boxing is concerned.

Under the able management of "Josh" Brooks, the now-defunct. Hong Kong Boxing Association used to see to it that there were at least a couple of tournaments every winter and in those days some good fights were seèn too. I remember the three scraps between Lake and Dobson (both from the Navy) for the lightweight belt while men like Ewin, Crichton and Rowles were always great drawing cards.

I learn that Seaman Harvey · 13 on H.M.S. Cumberland. If a suit- able opponent can be found for him I am sure that a few very Interesting supporting bouts can be arranged. What has happened tu the Colony's promoters? Is there nobody here willing to get.. up a show?—Yours etc,

The Royal Engineers are fleiding their strongest team for their Janior Shield (second round) re- play football match against the Navy at Causeway Bay on Satur- day..

RIFLE ASSOCIATION

C. B. A. PREPARES FOR MACAO VISIT

Two Hockey Practices Over

The Holidays

By R.H.B.

In preparation for their "Invasion”. of Mäezo, to taks, pisos un Sunday, February 6, the Central British Association bave ar- ranged an extensive scheduls of hickey games this wosk-end, which will include matches against the Hong Kong Police and the Karapesa Y.M.CA,, both of whom have played against the Macao Hockey Club,

On Sunday, on the Police Training School ground; at 10 km., the O.BA. will be represented by the following,`ini a United Clubs' Tournament Axture:-J. J. King; Taylor, S. MacNider; D. 8. Blake, N. Whitley, E. Fowler; D. T. Smith, 8. Fowler, G. Fowler, T. 8. D. Whitley and V. Bond.

On Monday, on the C.BA, ground at King's Park, coinmen- cing at 10 am., the C.B.A. will clash against the YMCA, in a friendly fixture. Great rivalry, I know, exista between these two teams, in a purely sporting and clean fashion, and I am made to understand that both sides are turning out their strongest elevens. to decide (as a "7" member sald) "once and for all which of the two teams is the better."

A lively clash should be the re- į side da some of the players failed sult and it is probable that the to "make" thẹ Macao boati C.B.A. will be represented by tha If my memory serves me right, team mentioned above. The "7" the C.BA has never defeated. line-up will include such stalwarts | Macao, on their own soil, although as Lt. Wallace, Cox, Austin, Star- buck, Benwell, etc. The game should be well worth witnessing.

MACAO VISET

All this is in preparation for the CBA. visit to Macao. The Portu- guese Colony side was defeated by the Police, 1-0 recently, whilst the V.M.C.A., drew with them in the drst encounter and lost, last week, 3-1-but with a much depleted,

on one occasion when Macao, visit- nd Hong Kong, they were beaten after a keen encounter by the only goal netted.

The CB.A men, so I have been informed, are going all out to de- feat their "away jinx”, and the matches arranged abore will go a long way to show how much their confidence in themselves is to be justified.
