Possible Disturbance

The report which was presented to the China and Far East Section of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce at its annual meeting recently speaks of the Sino-Japan- ese conflict as having in recent months completely overshadowed economic affairs in the Far East and as having led to the greatest possible disturbance to trade be- tween this country and China.

A year ago the Executive Com- mittee of the section expressed the view that, notwithstanding diff- culties in China for many years. there appeared to be a distinctly more favourable outlook and cited Lancashire's faith in the fact that concessions in the Customs. tarif | would materially help it to regain some share of the Chins market in cotton textiles. A halt has been called to these matters by the political upheaval, but the execu- tive 13 making every possible endeavour to keep the China ques- tion before the appropriate repart- ments of the Government.

Exports of cotton plece goods to China from January to August showed an Increase when com- pared with 1936. Since that month the figures record only 50,000 yards as having been shipped. The lead gradually diminished until at the end of November a deficit was re- corded as compared with the pre- vious year.

'SHIPMENTS TO HONG KONG

Shipments of cotton plece goods to Hong Kong hardly seem to have been affected by the trouble in China, At the end of August there was an advance of approximately 300,000 yards when compared with the previous year, and this "lead was maintained up the end of November,
