The first man then ran upstairs where he broke of one of the bindes of a ceiling fan and threw

In view of the very adverse con- ditions affecting trade during the past are months," it is a matter for satisfaction that the collection for the whole year should have ex- ceeded that for 1936. This grati-

fying result, while testifying to the

resiliency of the country's general economy, is attributable to the exceptionally good receipts secured during the first seven months, of the year, when conditions were more than usually favourable to

collection trade. The

for 'the seven months January-July, 1937, amounted to $262,260,000, œ 76 per cent, of the collection for the whole year. This rate of yield had never before been equalled in the history of the Customs over a like period, and represented an excess of, no less than 387,100,000 or about 69 per cent. over the collection made during the corresponding seven months of 1936.....

Of the other four, two were from Kowloon, one from Aberdeen and one from the New Territories,

During the same period there were also two cases of diphtheria, two cases of enteric fever and five cases of dysentery, four of which were from Victoria.
