Activities Exceed Scope Politics Involved?

Police on Friday night ralded and closed the Hong Kong Chinese Seamen's Union. The reason for the proscription, though not yet known officially, is thought to have originated from the belief that the activities of the Union were not conaned strictly to the Interests of seamen but were of a political

nature which the Government

deemed "undesirable."

A Chinese report states that Union officials were planning to promote a Labour Federation in Hong Kong with the object of pursuing a certain political policy.

THEFT OF LETTER FROM BOX

Appearing on remand before Mr. H. R. "Butters at the Kowloon Ma- gistracy on Saturday on charges of theft of a letter from a letter box at No. 388, Lalchikok Road on Jan. 16, endeavouring to obtain a sum of $28 and obtaining a sum of $15 on a forged document, Chan Wing. 34, unemployed, was remanded till January 28.

Hau Kwan-yue, 20, à resident of Chinese YM.C.A., Bridges Street, was instantly killed when he fell from the roof of the Associa- tion's hostel on Saturday morning.
