Holbow, Hainan Island, Jan. 20. Under a heavy protective barrage from three Japanese warships and the escort of a number of Japanese airplanes, a Japanese land- ing party of about 200 strong made an attempt to land at Yaling Harbour; on the southern coast of Hainan Island, in a number of motor boats and sampans yesterday morning.

The alert Chinese forces defending the harbour opened a heavy fire on the invaders to prevent them from approaching the coast. After a four-hour engagement, the invaders were finally repulsed. No serious damage resulted from the Japanese, naval bombardment-Central News.

Tunchl. Cheklang, Jan. 20. A steady stream of Japanese troops, numbering about 30,000 men, have arrived at Soochow, the Venice, of China. from Nanking during the last week, according to a new arrival from that city.

London, Jan. 19.

With reference to the report that the Singapore air base is to be substantially reinforced before the end of the year, it is learned in London that the present strength of the alr units at Singapore amounts to four squadrons, two of which, totalling 12 machines each. are torpedo and bomber squadrons, and the other two, flying-boat squadrons of four machines each.

The total to which the Singapore air strength will eventually be in- creased is not known, but since the beginning of Britain's air expan- sion, the strengthening of the air forces at Singapore has been en- visaged.
