THE SERVICES
(By the Air Mail, London, January 8). ROYAL NAVY
AGE OF NEWLY PROMOTED
CAPTAINS
In the Now Year promotions to captain, the selections have been made from slightly lower positions on the list of commanders than on the two previous occasions. A year ago the senior of the neiv captains was 53 places down the commanders list and the junior 183. Six months ago the senior was Sist and the junior 215th... This time the senior was 69 places down and the junior 222.
03
The zone for, promotion is from four to eight years' seniority commander. Three of the new captains had served for, the full term and three more for 7 years; at the other end are two captains with 4 years.
The ages of the officers promoted are rather lower than in previous batches. Two are 44 and three are 43, but others are not yet 40. The majority entered Osborne ummediately before the- War, but there are two who began their service as special cadets during the War. Captain L. S. Saunders.jotted Keyham Col- tege from Edinburgh Academy in September. 1914; and Captain Guy Grantham from Rugby in June. 1010. Captain Grantham passed j out at the head of his term and was chief cadet captain.
