Influences On Prices Of Steel

In the course of an article on Shipbuilding in the Annual Re- view of Lloyd's List Mr. F. E. Rebbeck, president of the Ship- building Employers" Federation, 1936-37, writes that "at present ship construction is not keeping pace with obsolescence. The Bri- tish proportion of the world's mercantile marine continues to decline, while foreign nations are increasing their ratio. This is a very serious matter for an island nation that is dependent upon marine transport for its food sup- piles and the raw materials of industry. A strong Merchant Navy Is as essential to the welfare of our country, and as a means of defence, as our ships of war.”

After referring to a rapid rise. in prices and a drying up of orders' for new merchant ships Mr. Rebbeck proceeds: "The

first helpful signs forthcoming were the announcements by the Pig Iron Producers' Association and later

the Steelmakers' Association that their prices were to be stabilized at present rates until the middle and end of next year respectively; and the reasons-given by the lat- ter industry for their stabilization were of almost more value than the stabilization itself, for they showed that the right spirit has guided the industry in its decision.
