THE HOLY SPRINGS OF

BALI

VISIT TO TAMPAKSIRING AND ITS

STRANGE LEGEND

In the pleasant coolness of the early morning our motor car rolled along the excellent asphalte roads of Bal through an avenue of waving palm trees that stretched far into the distance. The busy people of the island, were already hard at work. Many women were carrying their wates to market, gracefully striding with undula- ting galt as they balanced their loads loose on their heads. In the Пelds men were slowly stepping behind burly water buffaloes that were drawing ploughs through the stift. water eqvered loam. Others werktfeading down the heavy clumps of clay. while else where again men and women, constantly stooping, were pulling the young rice shoots out of the Irrigated nursery fields and plac- ing them in sheaves to be re- planted in their final positions, writes Dr. B. A. G. Vroklage in the "Nederland Mall."

Further along I saw the rice- felds, void of human beings, left to themselves in the fierce sun of the tropics that between the heat and the well-watered soil the rice might steaälly riper. In one place I saw the thin green shoots of the sprouting rice just plercing the

VISIT TO A TEMPLE

As soon as we left our car to visit one of the temples we were surrounded by men who offered to guide us Or to carry our photographic apparatus for 125. Unfortunately, the influx of tour- ists had already led them to de- part from the modesty and tour- tegy which elsewhere is the normal practice of the charming Balinese people in dealing with Europeans. In the course of my tours I was accompanied by a Balinese guide,

I Gusti Kloet tide, by name. whose

culture and knowledge were of considerable value to my studies. He was greatly perturbed by his countrymen's behaviour and spicke with anger of this so-called tour- ism that

tended to spoil his country. When I told how differ- ently I viewed his country and his people, his national suscep- tibilities in due course seemed appeased.*

Whoever those may be that have here been interred, it is not unreasonable to assume that there must have been some con- nection between these graves in Ball and the civilization of Java. And that is what one might well expect, since history teaches that It was from Java that the Ħia- duistic culture spread to Ball,
