After James Cator Scott Macal- lan, 69, a civil engineer, had been found guilty at the Old Bäßey re- cently of defrauding a nurse, n' détective said that among com- plaints made about him was one that he had received a consider able sum of money for the purpose of taking war material to China and Spain.
Macallan was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment for having obtained £125 by false pretences from Miss Elsie May Andrewartha, a.nurse. who visited him pro- fessionally.

Damage suffered by Chinese factories in the Shanghai area as a result of the war is topping the colossal figure of $800,000,000, accord- ing to figures compiled by the Greater Shanghai Bureau of Social Affairs. Rated as China's largest industrial centre, Greater Shang- hal's leading manufacturing, power and water plants have been" almost completely laid waste by the three months of hostilities, the report states:
While a total of 5.255 industrial establishments were damaged by fire, shells and bombs as a result of the fighting, none of these were located in the French Concession, the Bureau's report noted.
Although no exact figure was avaliable, the report pointed out that the Zahwel Creek and the Kaochanglao, both in the Nantao area, formed the most crowded factory district, of the city. Virtually all the plants in these districts were burned down. The Bureau. record lists 2,272 factories in the Nantao area,

LUNATIC ASYLUM ON FIRE
Dangerous Madmen Escape During Blaze
