CHRISTMAS
Though the celebration of Christ- mas as a family festival and a time of general revelry is comparatively modern-Dickens gave it such an impetus that he is sometimes said to have "invented" Christmas-the Joyful celebration of the occasion as a religious festival existed in the Catholic Church for a very long time. In fact the joyous character of the feast is completely of religious origin. for this note is more prominent in the music and ceremonies and prayers of the time than at any other time of the year except Easter. The first celebration of the feast which is on record took place in the fourth century. The actual day was chosen because that day was already a hollday In Western pagan times. and it was the practice to fix the Important religious festivals these days. The particular feast which Christmas, supplanted was that of that "Unconquered Sun." an encouraging feast in the time of the winter solstice. The earlier celebration of the Birth of Christ was confined
DA
to the Epiphany. which is now on the 6th January. This commemorates the coming of the Three Wise Men, and the oc- casion is taken to represent the first contact between Christ and "the nations beyond Palestine. Many of the traditional customs connect- ed with the Christmas period are of pre-Christian origin and belong ed to various festivities associated with the January Kalends. The Christmas tree. which is of German origin. cannot be traced back further than the 17th century. Is less than a century since it was Introduced into England.

TO-NIGHT: MIDNIGHT CHORAL EUCHARIST
The following are the Services
Dec. 24, Christmas Eve
The most distinctive Catholle Church ceremony of Christmas "is Midnight Mass. The celebration of Mass at midnight on Christmas Eve is not universal, but it extends to Hong Kong, and the occasion always ands the local churches thronged with worshippers. Each for Christmas: priest may celebrate Mass three times on Christmas Day. The three are said to honour respec- tively the temporal birth of Christ, His spiritual birth in the souls by Divine Grace, and the eternal Sonship of Christ as Son of God the Father. Each Mass, however. recalls these three aspects of the Nativity, and it would be more correct to say that in the first Mass Christ is honoured as the "Light of the World." In the second
as the "Prince of Peace." and th the third as "Son of God" and the bearer to men, of tidings of their adoption as sons of God.
