DEFENCE AT SEA

MERCHANT NAVY OFFICERS

Special Courses

Liverpool has sent more mer- chant navy officers to take the new defence courses against enemy attack at sea than any other port during the first three months of the scheme, and 95 per cent of those who entered for the courses completed them.

Altogether 308

masters, first mates. and second mates have entered for the courses in Liverpool and only 32 have been unable to

complete the instruction there. In many cases this is because their ships have salled, and It is probable that subsequent parts of the course have been taken by these officers at other ports.

The aim of the scheme is to enable merchant navy officers to know the latest methods used by the Royal Navy for anti-submarine work, convoy, and general pro- tection of commerce at sea. The course of instruction lasts Ave Mondays, and, as the syllabus is the same at each of the seven ports where instruction is given, any off- cer who moves from the port at which he started the course can continue his studies elsewhere without missing any of the sections

Courses began on August 31 at London, Liverpool. Glasgow. and South Shields, further classes being started in Huil and Cardiff on September 13. Southampton is also included in the scheme, but owing to the large number of liner off- cers using the port (most of whom are already in the Royal Naval Reserve and consequently not eligible for the course) the num bers attending there have been comparatively small.

COMPANIES COLLABORATE The total number of officers entered during the first three months was 1.468, which shows the keenness with which the merchant navy has accepted the opportunity to learn self-defence. The ship

plug companies have collaborated in the scheme, and it is expected that many more officers will pass through the instructional centres in the next few months.

All the officers in charge of the instruction are active service naval men, several of them from the submarine branch. An important feature of the scheme is the anti- aircraft defence section of the

no information course;

this on aspect a modern attack at sea having previously been available to merchant service officers.

SPIRITUALIST MINISTER

Baron Erik Palmstierna, who has been Swedish Minister in Lon- don since 1920, is 80.

Recently his resignation was an- nounced.

Baron Palmstlerna has thus, as was expected, taken advantage of the regulation in the Swedish Diplomatic Service which allows retirement at 60, though it only becomes compulsory at 65.

Economics and pacifism impel-- led him to authorship. His major interest is now Spiritualism. On this subject he recently came into prominence over the "discovery”. of the: Schumann Violin Concerto. Baron Palmstierna, in his latest book, "Horizons of Immortality," gave details of the psychic mes- sages Miss Jelly "d'Arany! received from Schumann about his un- published work.

The fact that it is, catalogued in the Berlin Library and is mention- 'ed... in some detail in Grove's Dictionary of Musle did not shake the Baron's faith in the super- natural nature of the information.

ASBESTOS SUITS FOR AIRMEN

Protection From Fire

A demonstration Of asbestos Dying-sults was given by the makers of the suits at their factory at Slough recently. The purpose of the suits is to give the crew of a burning aeroplane the extra few seconds to escape which may mean all the difference between super- felal burns and grave injuries, or between life and death.

Various designs of sult have been tried, and it is not yet. claimed that a final, satisfactory formula has been reached, the problem being to strike a balance between the several desired quali- tles of convenience, lightness, and resistance.

The complete suit now available weighs 121b, Soz.. heavier than the new standard RAF. flying-cult, but Tib. lighter than a type of suit that has only recently become obsolete. The helimet, gloves, and overall are cut from patterns taken from the standard R.A.F. equip- ment, with the exception that an asbestos gauže visor is incorpor- ated in the helmet for use in emergency. At present the visor is not giving complete satisfaction, since when rolled up on to the helmet it is apt to interfere with the goggles. Оде purchaser least has entirely mistaken its purpose, for he returned to com- plain that a gauze visor made a bad substitute for goggles. The boots are of a new pattern, being soft and pliable, fastening with a zip fastener up the back of the leg. They are worn over ordinary boots or shoes.

at

The whole equipment is made of a hardwearing, close-woven, light asbestos cloth. It can be made in three types-one waterproof; one not waterproof; and, one with the features of either of the other two but Uned with a blanket material, warm and not dangerously Infiam- mable

during which a man can remain There is no specific time limit

in a fire in one of these suits': all depends on the type of man, the type of are, and the intensity of

the fire. A minute would be the

average, but some men can stand three minutes.
