Few Hours' Notice appeared before Mr. R. Edwards at

Shanghai, Dec. 19. According to American naval cir- cles here, warships in Hawall and the Pacific coast have steam up ready to leave for China in a few hours' notice. American warships are replenishing their supplies in anticipation of orders for China waters.

It is pointed out here that the American navy will take indepen- dent action and will not officially co-operate with the British navy for fear of unfavourable reactions on the part of the American public. who believe that Great Britain having greater and direct interest n South China would utilize the American navy for British ends.

The American government is at- tempting to forestall such criticism on the part of the pubilc, who are aroused by the deliberate attack on the U.S.S. Panny and unwil lingness of the Japanese to admit this fact.

America will be satisfied if the Japanese emperor tenders an apology. It is believed here.

GIRL BEATER, BURNED

Serious Allegations In Kowloon Case

A 10-months-old girl named Lau Mut presented a sorry sight when she was brought to the Kowloon Magistracy.on Saturday when Ins-" pector H. W. Fraser, of the Secre- tariat for Chinese Affairs, prose- cuted Wong Tak-chuen, 40, a man, and Lí Kung, 24, a woman, before Mr. K. Keen, on charges of cruelty. Second defendant was not in Court, and her ball of $250 was estreated. On the application of Mr. Fraser, a warrant for her ar- rest was issued.

He had learned that the child had been burned, beaten, gagged and thrown on to the floor, and seeing marks of assault on her body, he painted them out to the woman, who admitted having chastised the baby because she would not stop crying

In reply to Mr. Keen. Insp. Fraser said that there was a chance of the second defendant being located. Expressing his wish to hear ful evidence on the case, Mr. Keen formally remanded first by Mr. R.
