If well meant, what a wealth of great good joy there is in that word,

for "greeting" means "welcome".

"II" is significant that, although the "general" concensus of opinion is that the world has never been so materialistically minded as it is

at the present time, yet that truly beautiful word is spoken and sent by millions to millions regardless of class, creed and colour. It comes as an assuabing zephyr after a humid tortured day, giving a very individuale and "pleasant feeling of relief that, be what may collective troubles. trials and tribulations there is at least something for which we can be grateful and of which we can say, “All's well”. the longest established morning newspaper in the Colony of Hong Kong, sends "Greetings" to its readers in a spirit of sheer sincerity.

WR

"E will let you into a "policy" secret.

THIS newspaper, The Hong Kong. Daily Press".

WHEN this Supplement was mentioned by the Managing Director,

there was a discussion as to what form it should take. It was decided that as "Christmas Supplements" were usually fashioned to, a certain pattern, that it would be more interesting to our readers if we placed before them a pictorial record of local happenings.

13

THE famous old Chinese adage was quoted: “A picture is worth a thousand words' and, on the basis of that truism it was decided to build this Supplement.

So, you have in your hands what we

ave endeavoured to make

very

various

into an adequate survey "at a glance". of those "doings".. "happenings" und "places" which have loomed large in the year 1937 in, the Colony.

WE

E dare not presume completeness; but, then, is anyone or any" "thing "complete" in the literal sense? We think not. But we do think that what you see in the following pages will bring back happy and gracious memories during a year which has been characterised by great happenings fraught with far-reaching consequences.

S

.

As you turn the pages you will skip lightly from the serious to the 'not-so-serious: you will find light and shade. (photographically and metaphorically) pn every page, and we trust that you will find in this Supplement a sensible souvenir of a momentous year,

WE

E now, in conclusion, take this opportunity of expressing to our Readers and Advertisers that lovely word enshrining a beautiful sentiment which is printed at the head of this Introduction~“Greet- ings", and with it goes our sincere good wishes for a Happy and Healthful New Year.
