CHINA'S FIGHTING
STUDENTS
The students of China are a war-torn generation, for ever since the Republic was founded in 1911 down to the present Sino-Japanese conflict, they have had to face the issue of recut- rent, war and national salvation, but despite all these troubles and tribulation nobody can say that they have been flinching in the face of duty.

MALAYAN REVIEW
Unemployment
The recent report issued by Mr. John Hands, M. C. H., honorary secretary and treasurer of the Belangor Asiatic Unemployment Com- mittee, makes surry reading if one refers back to the attitude of the Government with respect to the relief of these unfortunates, says the "Times of Malaya." The total amount of money received to date is $65,01031, which he compares with the sum of two and-a-half million dollars gally voted for aeroplanes.to be presented to the British Gov- vernment. "I cannot help thinking." he says, "that it would have 'been a better investment for this country if the money had been spent on a premium to ensure the loyalty of the rising generation by provid- ing education and food for that section of the community which is "too" ignorant to be clerks and too weak to be growing up. coolles. Mental Patients
Almost simultaneously with the release of the report of the Committee on Malayan Asylums the English Board of Control has issued its annual report. Both reports deal with the overcrowding of mental hospitals and the increasing lack of accommodation. The Board points out that the result is that in many hospitals the sta cannot do more than attend to the physical condition of patients. Whilst the Malayan report advocates economy, particularly in the type of buildings, the English report advocates more amenities for the patients. At present they have hairdressing saloons for women patients, recreational facilities and seaside holidays. The English re- port points out: Housing conditions and the weakening of home- ille have led in many areas to the admission of an increased number of old people, who a generation ago would have been cared for in- their homes." It is hoped that the Malayan Goverment will provide: early accommodation to relieve the congestion which is revealed in the committee report.
