SILK STOCKINGS

Embroidered Seams

Among the latest novelties in slik stockings are fine silk höse This with an embroidered seam. fashion cuts right across ideas in hoisiery decoration, for clocks, whether of

or the embroidered transparent lace kind, are still out of favour for silk stockings, and particularly for the sheery variety. But the embroidered seem hose

different, because here the decoration is at the back. The de- signs are in nine herring-bone or feather stitching. exceuted in coloured dots which make a sharp but pleasant contrast to the sheer slik of the stocking. The em- 'broidery runs from the ankle to half-way up the calf, or even the entire length of the stocking, and the colours used .for the em- proidered design are mostly deep shades such as blue, red, or nigger, which contrast well with the neutral stocking tints.

These jackets are sometimes used with good effect also on daytime dresses. when they are generally in some bright colour contrast, as when a street length dress of fine black woollen jersey is worn with a tiny balero of bright green. But the most successful have been in stiffened net or wide patterned lace. A dress of black crepe with tow coat brassiere bodice goes with a little straight jacket of

black Chantilly lace, reaching just above the waist line. It has long tight sleeves and is, accom panied by a headdress, composed

of a knot of black ribbon with a

faring eye-veil. Another dress of brown stiffened net has wide sweeping skirts and the briefest of little jackets of the same mate rial, with draped and folded shoulders on sleeves which barely cover the top of the arm, Iri a season when the demand is for a

defined bust line, and very low decolletage, there is a grace and softness about these little jackets which is becoming to all figures.

Tuck--in shirts and blouses are be worn with skirts which are raised above the waist on corselet lines. The continued fashion for high necklines and the habit of buttoning dresses and blouses down the back have produced a new plastron form of trimming. which is effective when made of snowy white lawn and

worn on blouse or dress of dark woollen material. Another neckline which looks well under talkored suits is taken straight across and finished with a drawstring, smocking, or hand scroll work.

Chiffon blouses are in dark colours with Beauvais hand em- broidery to relieve neck and 'sleeves. As with the new evening dresses, there is a distinct feeling for the use of sheer materials for this more elaborate type of blouse. These often have wide armholes and full sleeves, which end in a point called "bracelet length," which is new and more becoming than the Hine cut short above the elbow. An attractive little blouse of cherry-red chiion has fine gaugings across the front and back; Intersected by strips of plain material, which also forms а shaped basque, to fall

over the skirt. It has short sleeves, tiny glass buttons all down the front, and oval-shaped gaugings on the shoulders to give a squared effect. Another of ocean-blue velvet has ยก all-over stencilled design in self colour, and high neckline finished with a small knot of velvet.

PARIS FASHIONS

Though the Paris pavilions have now closed, the influence of the various furniture, wallpaper, and household displays will continue to radiate

many countries. Or would it be fairer to say that the exhibition' mirrored infuences al- ready at work and that such will merely continue in their own way?

Definite changes in taste to be seen in the furnishings of our houses do not stop at colour, but even there strange new tastes are viaible. Royal blue with pink, for instance, was a scherie many times repeated in different displays. Taste in colour has changed con- siderably: a Bruton-street Ärm, was remarking "at their recent exhibi- tion how popular an aubergine or prune slik run with gold had proved to be.

In fabrics the use of felt was marked. One of the smartest Paris dress shops has for a year used green felt with gold. In the Pavillon of Furniture green felt to cover chairs, buttoned down with small gold stars, was used, and green felt curtains ́ held back by chains of gold stars.

Dinning-rooms (it was in one such that the green felt with gold was shown) are turning more and more to circular tables, as parties rely more on conversational wit and less on actual food (in these days of diets) for their pleasure. The circular table to hold eight can be enlarged into an oval, but that it is not intended to do so is seen by the carpets being designed in round shapes and patterns.

Flowers play so important a part in decoration that not only dining- tables but desks and low occasional tables are made with drop-boxes, into which flower containers are dropped to give the effect of grow- ing plants or a parterre. of massed flower-heads Bedside tables are also made with small sunken welis. No piece of furniture in the Paris

In the daytime it stood orriametally at the head of the bed (one of a pair attached to twin beds): when the early morning, tea arrived it ran down to reachable distance for the hand.

"South " Australia has had * record wheat crop this year, and a good wool clip, thanks to plenti- ful rains," said Mr. R. Walker, who has Interests in a sheep station covering an area of over 600 square miles in South Australia,, în an Interview in Singapore. "We don't, want fancy prices for our wool In Australia, as they only increase the use of synthetic variety," said Mr. Walker. Recently Mr. Walker made an extended world tour to study the wool industry
