LA SALLE COLLEGE PRIZE DAY ·

Mrs. N. L. Smith Officiates

SATISFACTORY EXAMINATION

RESULTS REPORTED

The Annual Prize-Giving of La Salle College was held in the school ball yesterday, at which the Hon. Colonial Secretary (Mri, N. L. Smith, C.M.G.) and Mrs. Smith were present. the latter distribut- ing the prizes.

A very pleasant progrumme ́of music and light plays was render ed by the students.

Addressing the gathering, the

Rev.

Bro. Cassian, Sub-Director, read the following school report on behalf of the Director, the Rev. Bro. Almer.

I

The physical instruction of our boys is carried our efficiently by Mr. Pun Ylu Kwan of the Educa- tion Department and Corporal S G. Bates of the Royal Marines. am told that a well defined course will be evolved in the course of next year, and I am sure that it will be welcome by all students.

OLD BOYS

#

We can hardly yet speak of our Old Boys; the College having been functioning only six years; but it is very gratifying to learn that nearly all our boys who have finished the course provided in the school are doing very well.

SCHOOL REPORT During the year 1935-1937 the School met 293 times; we had an average enrolment of,869 with an attendance of 833, or approximate-taken on new boys as material for ly. 96 per cent.

INSPECTOR'S REPORT On December 1, 1936, Mr. E. J Edwards Inspected the school, and I shall quote from his report the following remarks:----

"The number of students on roll was $83, whom 841 were present at inspection.

"

"The school has accommodation for 960 pupils. but it is probable that with nearly 900 on the roll. the limit has been reached. "

"The exercise books in all classes are neatly kept and systematically corrected. The school has a Phy- sical Training Scheme allowing 30 minutes a week in each class.”

UNIVERSITY RESULTS Without being so brillant as in the two previous years, our results at the Hong Kong University Schpol Certificate Examination were satisfactory: 37 of our boys sat for this examination, 28 of them secured School Certificates, two passing with honpurs, namely, G. Fong Ian Sang and M. Go Tian Puz

We are now well started into an- other scholastic year and have

the continuance of our work which is to matriculate boys into the art and science of life; for most of them life will mean the patient and 'devoted endurance of irksome tasks from which they may never,

shrink nor excuse themselves; no amount of scientific baggage, that the student may carry away from school will ever replace the solid virtues whose foundations he must have well laid before he leaves it. As in the past we shall therefore insist on discipline, without which there can be no true education.

FUTURE PROSPERITY

After complimenting the Sub- Director on his report. Mr. Smith said: "I therefore only wish again to express our thanks for to-day's in- vitation and our very best wishes for the future prosperity of La Salle College."

S.I. Madgwick said he would like to clear up that point. He put it to defendant that he had asked her in the charge-room where her husband was, as she had claimed to be a married woman, and she had said he was out at a party. Defendant admitted this.------

S.I. Madgwick: "I couldn't make any enquiries when nobody could even be located."

Defendant reiterated her claims that she was a respectable woman, saying that this was the first time she had spoken to anybody like that. Asked by His Worship whe- ther she had anybody who could vouch for her character, she sug- gested her husband and mother, but added that the laster was not in Hong Kong.

The case was then remanded for 24 hours for her to produce: a character witness Ball in $50 was allowed.
