72 Men Sent Home From Singapore:

Admiralty Statement

11:

I obtained from the Admiralty a statement about the return to this country of 12 British seamen who have been working on fleet auxiliaries at Singapore, writes a London correspondent.

The men are now returning to England in the liner Naldera, and It is said that they will lay "grievances" before the Admiralty and the National Union of Seamen when they reach London.

The men represent the technical subordinate crews of the steamers Bishopdale, War Afridi and Ab- beydale, which have been engaged in carrying Admiralty stores.

ALLEGED COMPLAINTS.. They were signed under special Board of Trade" agreements "not exceeding two years."

In statements attributed to the men, it is `alleged that they are be- ing returned to England "because they complained about the condi- tions of their employment.

One of the seamen is said "to | have declared that he and two others of the Bishopdale were "made to sign statements that they had willingly resigned from the ship."

The men were also said to have. complained that their family al löwances had been cut without notice, and that they were not receiving proper treatment in the Naldera.

REFUSAL TO WORK WITH CHINESE

The Admiralty statement given to me was as follows:

"The men signed articles for not exceeding two years.

"There was considerable sickness among the men in the Abbeydale

and the War Afridi. Their places had to be filled, and as there were no Europeans to replace them. Chinese were engaged.

According to a report quoted by "Immediately this happened the the British United Press from the men complained that they could "Penang Gazette,” there were

"But we feel that there are other reasons which have not been made known to us. We shall do all we can to regain our rights."

The men had done only a few months' service. The Bishopdale left Glasgow on September 8. and, according to the seamen, five days before they reached the Singapore haval base they were told they would be sent back.

"In regard to the Bishopdale, It was considered that the same pro- blem might arise, so the men in this ship were also repatriated when they arrived at Singapore.

"The Admiralty have no know- ledge of alleged bad treatment in the Naldera."

An official of the National Union of Seamen told me that they had received no information and had no knowledge of the men's inten- tion to lodge complaints.
