AIR BOMBARDMENT
Learning A Lesson From The Far East War
(BY AIR COMMODORE L. E. O. CHARLTON,)
It is curious that it should have to be the fortune, or mistoz- tune, of Japan to show the Western world how to wage a modern war. But for the impact of Western civilization, so called, that island empire might have slept on anondingly in an isolation all her own, content, as China was, with a medieval "status quo" and an- xious only to be saved from the infiltration of Western standards of behaviour. Instead of that, seeing no other hope of individual sur- vival, she Westernized herself at breakneck pace by the use of cop- yist actics and a natural adaptabilliy until, in less than half a cen- ̧„ tury, she stood four-square to the world as a rising Power, azxres-' sively Imperialistic, and shaping her policies on the well-worn models of historical example.
To-day she is almost unassali- able and could only be subdued, or halted, in her career of ng- grandizement by a combination of Powers against her, which the situation elsewhere, in the way the world divides itself, renders 'out- side reckoning.. The League of Nations condemns her methods with a universal voice, but two Powers at least, outside it, strong, united, and prone to war, are competent and eager, should in- terference threaten, to take ac- tive measures to Implemen: the slogan of "Hands off Japan." It la a case of these having, for the time being. a whip-hand. In the sure knowledge that the nations at large shrink from war and would wear their prestige to a shadow rather than Indulge them- selves again with such a lunatic display, these totalitarian
two States can bluff and bluff again and, seemingly, for ever keep the world on edge.

Mr. Nicholas Lane Jackson,

Mr. Jackson, or Nanking should war break loose during his long career: again, the reason being, to men- tion it once more, our island eltua- tion, the shape of England, and the "locale" of the vast majority of our population. For some rea- son, the result, it may be, of an ostrich disposition, coupled with the fact that we have hitherto managed invariably to emerge triumphant from our wars and have never been properly invaded, we simply do not take the warn- ings we are given seriously.
