BOY'S 11-HOUR DAY
"Disgraceful hours," commented Mr. B. L. Q. Henriques, chairman of Stepney Juvenile Court, when a 14-years-old van boy charged with stealing watches belonging to his employers said that he worked 11 hours a day.
This, the boy added, included overtime at fourpence an hour. His wages were 16s a week, and he did eight hours a week over
time.
When it was stated that the boy had lost his job Mr. Henriques "I am very glad to hear of
said:
it"
The boy was placed on probation with a view to being assisted to find a lob with "good prospects."
A sample of fruit, weighing nearly half a ton, was presented to the Lord Mayor of London, at the Mansion House recently.

The gift represented a compro- mise made many years ago be- tween the Lord Mayor of the period and the guild. By this ar-' rangement an ancient right to take a sample of every load of fruit entering the City was waived on the understanding that the guild would present an "annual sample,” and that the Lord Mayor would invite the deputation to stay to dinner.
A large quantity of the "sample" will find its
London way to hospitals.
