It is a natural time for the series to begin. because 2ง commemoration of the events of Christ's life Is the purpose of all the important feasts, a beginning is obviously made with the birth of Christ and with the period of preparation that comes before the feast. ST. ANDREW
There is a certain appropria- teness in St. Andrew's feast being the guide to the opening of the Church's year, for St. Andrew was a follower of St. John the Baptist. and was the first of the apostles to be chosen by Christ. His first act after this was to introduce to Christ his brother Simon Peter. Very little is actually known about the life of St. Andrew, after the death of Christ. There are several legends about his movements but
there is nothing to substantiate. them. There is a very old tradition that he was crucifted, though not nalled. to a tree. The particular form of X-shaped cross which 1s associated with him and is sup- posed to be a représentation of the shape of the cross on which he died has no mention in the earlier accounts of his death, and in fact seems to have been an invention of the artists. It was the bringing to Scotland of some relics of the saint that aroused particular devo- tion to him there so that eventual- ly he came to be accepted as the country's patron. He was also venerated for centuries as the patron of Russia. His tomb is in Amalfi, & picturesque town in the Gulf of Naples, a few miles below Serrento

cathedral, which was one of the most beautiful Catholic cathedrals In the world and probably the Seaforth Highlanders will be pre-
most elaborate of all in its exterior decoration, was struck by shells 287 times during the Great War. Many of the great flying buttresses were shattered, and the leaden roof, which contained more than four hundred tons of lead,' was melled in the fires caused by the shells. The task of restoration' scemed at first such a colossal undertaking that it was regarded as impossible, and nothing but the enthusiasm of those most closely connected with it could ever have brought it to a conclusion. It was largely through the, generosity of Mr. John D. Rockfeller. Jr. that it was completed in such a short time. The architect of the restora- tion was M.
