The outstanding sports event this, week will, of course, be the local appearance of the German tennis stars. Baron Gottfried von Cramm, Herr Henner Henkel, and Fraulein Marie Horn. These players have agreed to give an exhibition at the Hong Kong Cricket Club ground on Friday. Prices to view them are $3 for seats in the stand, $1 for chairs on the east side, and fifty cents standing room. Personally, I think All these are very fair charges. the players are world-ranking per- formers and all did very well in their Japanese tour, annexing the Men's Singles. the Men's Doubles and the Women's Singles. Von Cramm, of course, won the first title, the two inen secured the doubles crown and Fraulein Horn walked off with the women's championship with ease. Actually Friday's

series of exhibition matches should be better than that given by the two professionals, Bils for the public to roll up in their Tilden and Ellsworth Vines last year at the end, of which, I. at least, had a slightly dissatisfied Iceling. It was not that the two did not give the public their value for money, but Tüden, whatever he might have been in his hey-dey. was, in between the flashes of old- time brilliance, definitely interior to his younger and more agile 'con- frere who, despite the results of the famous "world-championship"

matches between him and Fred Perry. I regard as the best tennis player in the world to-day. This inferiority was at times so marked that Vines had palpably to hold himself to and this sort of thing does detract' a ittle from the pleasure of spectators.

There will be no fear of that on Friday, that is, provided one or both of the men are fit and not suffering from an off-day. In a five or three set match von Cramm appears the probable winner but Henkel is likely to make him go the whole distance and a slip on the part of the Baron might easily lead to his downfall. Fraulein Horn, is also a first-class performer, in the ladies' division that is, and a match between her and a local man star might see an interesting struggle

It appears that the correct score in the Societies' match on Sunday leaves a margin in favour of St. Andrew's of 27 points.

A. G. K. Brown, the famous international quarter-miler, turned his attention to rugger. Last week at Cambridge he scored a magnificent try for Peterhouse In his first inter-college match.

It was the result of a run right down the right wing, a perfectly controlled swerve inwards with a change of pace, and, as the full- back hesitated. a second swerve outwards, now at ful speed. The chief feature of the whole move- ment was not the speed at which it was.actually achieved, but the de- lightfully controlled swerve and pace variation.

No other runner on the English- track at the present time has the relaxation and co-ordination of Brown, and as he intends this term to drop out of competitive athletics and devote his spare time to other sports there is no telling what he may do in the football world.
