PEARL BUCK'S EPIC WELL PRESENTED

The overworked word "epic," comes into its rightful own with the long-awaited showing of M-G- M's masterful motion picture ver- sion of "The Good Earth" which is now showing. at the King's Thea- tre: Based on the novel by Pearl S. Buck, one of the greatest sellers of modern literature, and on its subsequent stage adaptation by Owen Darts and Donald Davis," "The Good Earth" has been trans- lated to the wide horizon of the screen with rare intelligence, a profound

alien race, and a sensitivity heart- stirring in its unfoldment of the Ilves of people bound hand-and- foot to the so which gives them their daily bread and also the poetry through which they may sustala their poverty.

In the story of the impoverished farmer, Wang. (played by "Paul Muni) who takes to wife the slave-girl O'Lan (Luise Rainer). who fights against locusts, against famine against revolution we have a panorama of Chinese civiliza- tion. O'Lan works beside her hus- band in the fields, gives him sons and a daughter, and restores his fortune when the famine ruins him. The revolution brings unex- pected wealth to Wang, destroying his ambition, his integrity and philosophy. He marries a younger woman only to discover bitterness and defeat when his eldest son falls in love with Wang's new

bride. Again it is the faithful O-Lan who restores peace and happiness to the family, and hav- ing performed her duty, dies.

The supporting cast includes Walker

The Dramatic Critic of the "Morning Post" writes:

Mr. Ion Swinley, whose sudden death in his 48th year is nounced. had been, since. Mr. Henry Ahley's retirement, unrival- led on our stage in many of the qualities that go to the making of n great tragedian-dignity of bear- ing." passion, Imagination, and the accomplished use of a beautiful

voice.

He had not the dominance and organising power needed to fulfi ambitions he might have achieved if he had gone into permanent management. He was destined to spend all too much of his time giving distinction to leading parts in inferior plays. But as a Shake- spearean and romantic actor he leaves a multitude of inspiring memories--from his first appear | ances with Sir Herbert Tree at His Majesty's as a young actor of nine- teen to his admirable" Prospero in the recent Open Air revival of The Tempest."

*

Born at Barnes--the son of Harry J. Swindles he was educated at St. Paul's School and the Royal Academy of Dramatle Art, where he gained a gold medal, joining Sir Herbert Tree's company in 1911 to play Demetrius in "A Midsummer Night's Dream." His versatility was soon to be evinced, for during one month of the same year he played | Donalbain in "Macbeth" at ELS Majesty's, and Octavius In Shaw's "Man and Superman" Criterion.
