SHANTUNG FRONT
Tsinan. Nov. 20: Chinese and Japanese forces are still holding out on the opposite banks of the Yellow River in north Shantung. With the exception of intermittent exchange of artillery fire there has been so far no development on the
" Shantung front.
Chumstances leading to the Chinese withdrawal to the south bank of the River were revealed in an official report, published here. It was stated that on November 10 a detachment of Japanese réin- forcements advanced from Tsang- chow on the Tientsin-Pukow Rail- way to Chingyun on the Hopel- Shansi border and dislodged a smaller Chinese garrison there the following day.
After capturing the town, the Japanese detachment pushed to ward Huimin on the Shaho River ir. nerth Shantung in an attempt to cross the Yellow River at Ching- hochen and March down to Chowtsun, on the Kiaotsi Rallway. Aware of the menace of this Japanese flank movement, General Fu-chu, according to the report. rushed reinforcements to Hulmin to check their advance and placed heavy troops at Chinghochen to

Lest the Chinese rear should be cut. off by the Japanese flank at- tack, a general withdrawal to the south bank of the Yellow River, the report said, was ordered by General Han on November 15. To prevent the Japanese from crossing the river the railway bridge at Lokow was twice dynamited by the Chi- nese troops on the night of Novem- ber 15 and the morning of Novem- ber 18- feniral News.
