THE ELEVENTH EXTRA RACE MEETING QELD AT THE RACE COURSE YESTERDAY WAS A VERY SUCCESSFUL ONE, PEATURED AS IT WAS BY EXTREMELY GOOD SPORT." THE FINISH IN THE HONG KONG ST. LEGER, THE SECOND RACE ON THE PROGRAMME, WAS ONE OF THE BEST SEEN IN THE VALLEY FOR MANY A LONG DAY. IT WAS WON IN. GRAND STYLE EVE, WITH MR. P. MARSHALL UP. THE SECOND PONY WAS BY HAPPY EXPANSION TIME (MR.S. C. LIANG) WHICH WAS ONLY A SHORT HEAD EVE IN FRONT OF THE SECOND STRING FROM THE EVE STABLE-HAVOC WITH MR. NORMAN DEITZ ON THE SADDLE,

In the fith race of the day Bolniak Star, ridden by Mr. 8. C. Liang, sustained, it is learned, a broken leg, throwing the jockey heavily. Mr. Liang escaped with a bad shaking but the pony had to be brought back to the stables in the ambulance box and låter destroyed. The most successful jockey of the day was Mr. Donald Black who had two firsts while The Derby Day-Yum Sing combina Mr. Dunbar headed the owners' list with two wins tion paid only $31.70 for the Daily Double while the biggest dividend of the day was paid by Harvest View (Mr. Y. T. Fing) who returned $81.90 for a $5 bet.

CASTLE PEAK HANDICAP One of the best finishes seen in Happy Valley for many a long day was provided in the Castle Peak Handicap when Wild Life (Mr. D. Black) Anished with an excellent burst of speed to win the Castle Peak Handicap from Gladiator (Mr. F. Marshall who was a short head in front of Bear Claw (Mr. S. L Yuen. The finish was very thrill- -ing. the issue bedrig in doubt till

the very end.

Oak Bay (Mr. W. H. S. Davis) and Gladiator ran side by side for three parts of the race but after the Rock was passed Bear Claw moved up and ran together with the two leading ponies. Then at the Dis- tance Post Wild Life came up like. "a streak and challenged the leaders strongly, eventually winning by a head.

The race for novice jockeys re- sulted, as expected, in a win for Mr. S. L Yuen on Yum Sing, the second and third places being filled by Ebony Idol (Mr. R. M. Wood) and Happy Venture respectively. Mr. Yuen gode a very fine race in- deed. He was satisfied with fourth place until the field turned into the stretch coming home and then he let Yum Sing go. He was very heavily backed and as a result only paid $8.50 for a win. 7-Talpo Handicap (From the Two Mile Post Once Round and In Mr. M. T. Johnson's Yum Sing.

from the very start that the result would be between the three ponies that filled the first three positions and in passing it might be men- Lloned that the final positions were correctly given by "Last Quarter" in our issue on Saturday. There was nothing in the race as the first three ponies were far superior to the others in the race.

Swept ashore off the Chatham Road praya by the disastrous typhoon of September 2 last, the Chinese owned steamer Eng Lee was succesfully refloated by Kowloon Docks tugs on Friday night between 8.30 and 9 'b.m. The vessel is now berthed at a buoy off the west wall of the Kowloon brocks. The above picture was taken on the morning of the typ hoan.
