NEW MEMBERSHIP RECORD

The news that His Excellency the Governor has honoured the Association by accepting the Invitation of the Counell to succeed Sir Andrew Caldecott as Patron, has been received by the members with unfelɛned pleasure, particularly because they recognize that it was due to Sir Goffrey Northcote that a team from British Gulana this year attended the Imperial Meeting at Bisley, and won one of the two Inter-Colonial team events.

JAPAN REVIEW

Japan's War On The White Race

The machine-gunning of the British Ambassador to China by a Japanese plane recently, was not intentional, we feci sure. Even the most malevolent Japanese airman, though he might have made out the British flag from the Ambassador's radiator cap, could hard- ly have made out the Ambassador himself in the car. It doubtless was one of those unhappy incidents of war and nothing more, as the Japanese Insist, says the "New York Daily News."

L

However, other developments in the undeclared war between Japan and China show to our satisfaction that Japan is also fight- ing an undeclared and informal war against all the white people in China-Americans, British, French. Dutch and so on.

The naval attack on Shanghai couldn't help Japan strategically against the Chinese. But it could result. and has resulted, in the destruction of a lot of white people's property in Shanghai; and a lot of white people have pulled out of Shanghal in consequence.

Tokyo's mumbles about perhaps extending its Chino coast blockade to include American ships trying to get to Chinese ports .. amounts to another Japanese invitation to us to get out of Asia and stay cut. So did Japanese Premier Konoye's anub. last week. of the American-British proposals for a trace and for creation of a neutral zone around Shanghal.

It all adds up. we think to the fact that-

JAPAN WANTS ALL CHINA

for its private property, and is now actively working to fulfill that desire.

Japan, further, is gambling every thing it has on success, in this twin undertaking; this drive to root the white man out of China and to bring all China under its control.

Japan may lose. The Chinese may be able to put up a long enough fight to bankrupt Japan. Or the British, the Russians, our- selves or all three many come to feel that war on Japan would be better than a Far East of which Japan was in sole control.

An unusually large number of members attended the mid-week

If Japan wins this gamble, we can't believe that Japan will be content to stop there. It will probably pause for a time, to solidify its gains in Asia and root out the last vestiges of the white man's commercial and religious footholds in China. But after that, what?

For all the brilliant resistance the Chinese have thus far put up against the Japanese, both at Shanghai and on the Nankow Fass sector up north, we cannot afford to gamble on a Chinese victory in this war. Or on a Chinese victory aided by any other power, though Russia seems to be sending what help it can to the Chinese.
