ECONOMIES IN COAL TRADE

MR. STANLEY CALLS FOR ACTION

Mr. Oliver Stanley. President, 01 the Board of Trade, speaking in London recently, called for more concentration in the coal industry so as to effect greater economies and prevent exploitation of the public.

He was speaking at a luncheon of the Coal Industry Society at the Hotel Victoria. Lord Gainford presided.

Mr. Stanley said that in any legislation that might be in troduced the Government was not legislating so much for 1937, but against 1931, because it wanted to see the coal industry able to pursue an even course and enable those responalble to plan with some certain knowledge of the future.. "There is one demand the public will make." said Mr. Stanley, "and that is that the minimum price it is going to be asked to pay so as

to stabilise the industry, shall not be unnecessarily increased by an incurable defect in the organisation of the industry itself.

"Can you conscientiously deny that there are Instances where some form of increased concentra- tion would mean some increased economies?
