CHINESE TAKE COTTON MILL

Shanghai, Nov. 5: Chinese mil- tary headquarters claim that 23 Japanese soldiers who have been holding the Sung Sing Cotton Mill on the south bank of Soochow Creek have been annihilated fol- lowing two attacks by the Chinese forces.

Barricaded in the basement of the building and refusing to sur- render their arms, the Japanese "doomed unit"" succeeded in hold- ing off the Chinese attacks for two days. On Tuesday number of Chinese dare-to-die members broke into the building and fred point blank at the Japanese, killing nine, but were driven out. Yesterday, they stormed the mill and riddled the remaining Ja- panese defenders with bullets.

Five machine-guns were seized in addition to a huge quantity of other supplies.—

Our infomant was doubtful whe- ther the river barrier would be removed completely until the Sino-Central News. Japanese troubles have ceased.

"The boom was placed because of a fear of attack by the Japanese navy and that fear still remains, If anything worse than ever, after the Japanese

victories the north," he said, "and I do not think there is going to be any change there."

JAPANESE WASTE BOMESĮ With regard to the bombing of the Canton-Kowloon Railway, our informant said Canton people were not very apprehensive on that score. They felt that the only way the service could be disorganised: was by blowing up a bridge or two, but in the case of the railway to Kowloon, the bridges were strongly defended by anti-aircraft batteries and the chances of the Japanese airmen hitting and seriously damaging any of these, especially the Sheklung bridge which was particularly well guarded, was re- mote. Bombing of the railway track was an absolute waste of money for the Japanese and was worse than useless. Many bombs were usually wasted before a direct hit was made and then the repair work was generally completed in ä few hours!
