JAPANESE OFFENSIVE ON
WESTERN FRONT BEGINNING SHORTLY
STANDARD OIL COMPANY'S INSTALLATION NARROWLY ESCAPES DESTRUCTION
Tokyo, November 5: The question of whether Japan would accept mediation by a third Power In the Far Eastern conflict was answered to-day by a spokesman of the Japanese Foreign Office with the declaration that "in any case, it would be still too early to define the Japanese attitude." The Foreign Office spokesman then emphasised that the Japanese Government is still maintaining the viewpoint that the Sino-Japanese question must be solved without the intervention of a third party, Japan would therefore disregard intervention of any kind whether by the Brussels Conference or by any quarters.-Transocean News Service.

Tokyo, November 5: Official quarters here have declared that the Japanese Government has not yet reached a definite decision with regard to the question of whether formal declaration of war is to be made and Imperial Headquarters" to be established here. Political quarters hers, however, believe that formal declaration of war as well as the establishment of Imperial Headquarters here is Imminent-Transocean News Service.
Shanghai, November 5: The grand Japanese offensive on the western front is expected to start very shortly. A Chinese spokesman admits there are now four thousand Japanese troops on the south side of Soochow Creek but independent observers believe the number to be much higher. An advance force has obtained a strong footing and is slowly making headway despite powerful resistance. Mean- while an improvement in the situation at Hongkew with the transfer of the war zone westward is seen by the arrival of eighty Gelsha giris from Japan and a number of regular Japanese residents also returning. The Standard Of Company's Irollation at Footung had a very narrow escape from destruction at noon when a Japanese bomber crashed from low hanging clouds near the compound. Fortunately the two bombs aboard falled to explode. Both plots were killed outright-Reater.

AMAZING RECOVERY

Business Almost Normal
EUROPEAN'S TRIBUTE TO
KWANGTUNG GOVERNOR
"The manner in which Canton has recovered from her recent troubles and has resumed her normal life has been amaz- ing and is a tribute to the splendid, administration of General Wu Te-chen, the Kwangtung Governor," said a well-known Eu- ropean merchant of Canton yesterday in conyersation with a re- presentative of "The Daily Press."
Speaking of conditions. In the city, our informant said that although business had been hit by the blockade and the bomb- ings, the buoyancy of the export trade was surprising in the circumstances. Talk of business being at a standstill in Canton was a lot of nonsense and there was no despondency, at any rate not among European firms.
The visitor from Canton thought this was almost solely due to the energetic action taken by the. Governor when business people began to leave the city, panic- stricken. after the Japanese bomb ings began. A large number of re- fugees were now returning to Can- ton and the business life of the city was rapidly returning normal.
