TELEPHONE

COMPANY

Is Big Loser In. Hostilities

When the time comes for a reckoning of leases sustalled by foreign firms in Shanghai during the current hostilities between China and Japan, the Shanghai Telephone Company. a subsidiary of the International Telephone and Telegraph Co. of America, will rate as one of the largest losers.

When the fighting started in the northern areas of the Internation- al Settlement, hundreds of thou- sands of Chinese and foreigners residing in these districts hurried- ly left their homes, carrying with them cnly their most valuable be- longings. Since then, the Japan- ese navy and military have taken control of the greater part of this area, and on only two occasions haye permitted foreign nationals to return to their former residences for the purpose of removing per- sonal belongings."

The Telephone Company asked their subscribers to remove their telephone sets and return them, to the company's offices, but this ap-. peal tulled to produce satisfactory results. Consequently, the Com- pany's losses will be considerably swelled by the loss and destruc- tion of their movable equipment. Most of the cables and under- ground wires in the war-torn aren have already been destroyed by bombing and shelling.

From the restricted areas where foreigners have been permitted to visit.come reports of the complete destruction of 19 square blocks of shops and houses, while innumer- able other bulidings & have been completely gutted by are.

"

TREMENDOUS LOSSES.

The losses sustained by the com- pany will be tremendous. In many instances Japanese soldiers and civilians have been seen deliver- ately tearing out telephones and destroying them.
