FIRST VOLUME OF

MEMOIRS

Unless vast quantities of emer- gency rations are stored. through- out the country, Britain will be started Inte submission within the first month or two of war.

This is the view expressed by Mr. J. R. Clynes in the first volume of his "Memoirs"

(Hutchinson

and Company, 12s 8d.), and he urged the immediate creation of ashadow Food Ministry. ready for emergency, saya the “Morning Post."

Mr. Clynes, is "a democratic mon- arch, who has inspected poverty at close quarters, and is known to feel the urgent need for reforms for the benefit of the more unhap- py of his subjecta.”

AS FOOD CONTROLLER. His account of the closing stages of the War and how Britain was facing famine makes striking reading. Foodship after foodship was törpoed. Humour brightened those critical times. At a luncheon at Blackpool Mr. Clynes was given a minute portion of Ash. He asked for second helping, and the waitress whispered, "I am afraid I daren't; they say the Food Con- troller is here."

Describing how he became food Controller, Mr. Clynes tells how Mr. Lloyd George arranged the appointment. At the Memorial for Lord Rhondda," Mr. Lloyd George wrote details of a appointment on the

Mr. Clynes was Food Controller during part of the War period, and became the first Socialist Service Home Secretary.

"It is a direct result of the luncheon spoliation or Germany by quar-margin of a hymn book, tore it off

relling victors," he declares, "that Britain to-day stands on the verge of another War to End Wars.' Our men who died in Flanders are being betrayed even while I write this. We have learned nothing."

Of Mr. Ramsay MacDonald he writes: "MacDonald has struck such a blow at British Labour as will never be forgotten, though it will be survived. It is possible that, had I been able to see into the future. I might have taken another line of action in 1922, which would have deprived him of the power to strike that blow."
