BRAIN OF A FISH
The brain of a fish is in all ite essential parts the same as that of 1 man, Professor J. Gray. Reader in Experimental Zoology at Cambridge University, stated in a lecture at the Albert Hall, Nottingham.
Removed By An Operation
A "live" 2-inch Mauser shell (as it is described) has been success- fully removed from the shoulder of Bias Martin Mora, a private soldier in the Spanish Government Army.
The shell embedded itself, with- out exploding, in the man's left shoulder on July 18, and as it was liable to explode at any moment, great care had to be taken in re- moving the wounded soldier to a first-aid station and then to a base hospital,
An artillery expert was called. and after the surgeon had made an incision in the man's back the expert was able to unscrew and remove the
detonator cap, thus.. rendering the shell harmless and comparatively easy to remove.
The whole operation took four hours, but the soldier is now, con- valescent, and has been con- gratulated on his escape by Gener- al Mlaja.

He spoke of the marvellous feats during a paper on "Intelligence of navigation of the eel and Tests and the Secondary School salmon, and said that one must hesitate before concluding that in -riavigation man took a higher

Experiments forced them to con- clude that the Pacific salmon was able to retrace its path of many hundreds of
miles and reach with what could only be called uncanny Instinct, the river of childhood.
"Different examiners give dif- ferent marks to the same script. and the
same examiner gives different marks to the same script It he marks it at different times.”
Ten experienced examiners were set to mark Independently 150 arithmetic serints. For only one cut of the 150 Ald they g've iden- tical marks differing in the other sometimes by as much as 39 marks out of 100.
"How are we to explain this feat of navigation? Has the salmon a sense of direction, or does he keep near the bottom. carefully recording the landmarks as he goes and so is able to retrace his Rochester, N. Y-Jack can have steps?" Professor Gray asked. his beanstalk, but Owen Brewer,

not, why not?
Mr. Brewer, despite his more than half a century of farming. is unable to explain why the tomato plant outstripped its neighbours by four times a normal growth. He has been too busy driving nails in the side of his house, where the plant grows, to "tle up" its spread, which already has reached five feet.
