Large concentrations of bota Chinese and Japanese troops are taking place south of Wentsau- pang Creek, the Chinese having realised the danger in the violence of the Japanese attempt to cut off the Chinese troops fighting round Klangwan.

One thing is evident, however, as a result of the battle of the past two days, that the Japanese will have to call on yet more rein- forcements before they can launch anything like their much-vaunted grand offensive, which so far has "failed to materialise.

AMAZINGLY EFFECTIVE......

The Chinese took the Japanese completely by surprise when they launched a dank attack near Wen tsnopang Creek forcing them back to the south bank.

In Chapel, the Chinese, after sending the Japanese tumbling back in disorder, abandoned their new positions and retired to their original lines.

The Chinese artillery fire from Pootung has been amazingly effec- sive, and the Japanese positions in Yangtsepoo have been practically demolished.

The heavy Japanese concentra- tions in this area suffered terribly DE Chinese shells and bombs burst.

The few remaining foreigners who have been clinging to their homes in the Hungjao district have evacuated into Shanghal itself as a result of the Japanese air raids in that area.

It is regarded as highly probable in foreign quarters that the Japan ese will make Hungjao. the objec- tive of further attacks from the skies.→→

The paper expresses the opinion that now that Germany has also guaranteed Belgium's indepen- dence. muny Englishmen will "be gin to doubt whether England's frontiers are on the Rhine, as pro- claimed by Mr. Stanley Baldwin."

Italy, says the paper, welcomes the German declaration, not only on account of its bearing on rela- tions between Germany and Bel- g'um, but also because of the re- percussions it is bound to have in Europe.

The constructive efforts produred by Italo-German friendship are dally becoming more evident.

"Popolo d'Italia" sees in the German declaration further sign of the change which has taken place in Europe since the Italian victory in Abyssinia and the break up of the Stresa front,

Every measure tending to con- solidate peace, even within a Kmit- ed area, is to be welcomed.

The German declaration says. "The Times", Introduces a дея element of security into Western Europe, and will consequently, be approved by all those who take the view that peace should be streng thened gradually, and methodically.

The journal considers it impor- tant that the German declaration avoided the word "neutrality" since Belgium does not desire neutrality but independence.-- Transocean.
