Even where there is no actual contact with: fighting and no air raids, so far. the drain of Mission resources to help the wounded and refugees has made" it necessary to pend many missionary activities throughout the 'country. A num ber of schools, for instance, have had to be closed because there arë no funds

to pay the teachers. This is done with considerable 're- gret, and It is hoped that as soon are things are better organised It will be possible to "open most them again. The six missionaries who were captured by Irregular troops near Peining several weeks ago are still held captive, in spite of the hopes that were held out when four of their confrercs were released. Most of the band of captors are said to be in favour of their release, as they do not wish to be regarded as bandits, but the leaders still hope to be able to exchange them for a large sup ply of war materials.

The damage done to Catholic missionary institutions in Shang- hai seems to be very considerable. though the extent of it is not yet fully known. Recent Information tells that four bombs struck the Sacred Heart Hospital after its evacuation. A bomb also fell on "the secondary school attached to the Aurora University, injuring seven members of the Mission staff,

KNATCHBULL ABBESSES

When the Ambassador to China occupied a prominent place in the news, owing to his injury by the Japanese, a number of details about him and his family appeared in the papers. One was that ona, of the family played a part in the Restoration of the Stuarts. This was an Abbess of the Benedictive Abbey of Ghent. What her sør- vices were is not very clear, but an of record states that she "was very serviceable to King Charles II and his brother, the Duke of York, while they were in banishment, not only in the way of hospitality to them and their followers, but even in matters of the highest concern relating and their restoration. which passed through her hands and were managed with singular" prudence." She was the fourth Abbess, and one of three of the Knatchbull family who held the. office. The best known was the first Abbess of the Convent, Lady Lucy, whose life was written about three hundred years ago by Bir Toble Matthew and was republish- ed in 1931.

The sixteen-year old daughter of Pasha Yussef Zulficar, who is to be married to King Farouk of Egypt next February, was at a Catholic Convent school when the king's choice tell upon. her. Like his mother, Queen Nazli, the future Queen Farida was educated at the convent of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Sion, and was one of the leading pupils both in studies and games. She was in the convent since she was eight years old and was preparing for the Baccalan- reate examination this month when her engagement put an end to her studies. "What a pity," her teacher. Sister Leonie, is reported to have exclaimed, "and such a good student!" Her companiers at school were also disappointed, be- eause she was the" best player on the basket-ball team."
