FALSE HOPES

(October 10, " 1937).

So longer is it possible to support the fiction that Japan is not waging a war of aggression against Chijnu. Technically, however, there is the viewpoint which could be maintained according to international law that actually there is no war in progress as such. Nevertheless, the good earth of China, drenched' in the blood of thousands of inoffensive and defenceless citizens, is adequate proof, it such were needed, to the world that a bloody and unrighteous war is besmirching the Far East.

TAKE ACTION

In 'The Pyrenees Frontier

Rome. Oct. 0:

The Italian reply to the joint Anglo-French Note suggesting a three-Power Conference on Spain, was handed to the Ambassadors to-day.

In Paris, says a message from the French capital, it is under- stood that the reply confirms the forecast that Italy would decline to participate in the conference unless Germany is Invited, aug- gests that the non-intervention committee could adequately deal with the points raised and states therefore that the conference is unnecessary.

Such a reply would be regarded in France as unacceptable, and it is understood would be followed by definite action in the form of upening

the Pyrenees frontier within a few days, following con- sultation with London.
