Silks, Satins And Velvets
Materials for evening gowns are of great beauty and magnificence this year. The lames are in great- er varlety than usual, and gold vnd silver flushed with colour
are seen in both the heavy silks and in the cpaque crêpes; they lend themselves to the new
silhouettes according to their tex- turc. The richest are brocades and stiff duchesse satins. Some. designed for prnate evening coats. follow to a certain extent the flow- ing fitted lines of last year, but with a
more elaborate shoulder
and sleeve; others are designed for picturesque evening with sculp- tured fullness in the skirt.
Raised gold designs are a fea- ture both of the damask satins and damask georgettes. The latter
are heavy, so that they do not re- quire any underslip, and drape beautifully. Brocaded stiff duchesse satins have special importance this season and they are in several weights, some of which are like the old Victorian materials that could stand alone, while others are sleeker and mure yielding but

These gorgeous materials are a distinguished contrast to some of the spangled gowns which built up on net and which are not " unlike the stage frocks of music- hall favourites in bygone days. There are strange new shot Jamés: one or these in pink and green, as stiff as a duchesse satin, was used for a striking gown, shown at a recent parade, with an odd con- trast of vivid striped lamé in rain- bow colourings used for stiff pumpkin" puff sleeves. Pastel lames on crêpes stress the ground colour more than the metal, and among the colours this year are пет shades of blue the most pleasing being a soft aster-blue- new greens, including ginger-green in Georgian colour), a soft puce, a milky cyclamen, and a grey beige. All of them acquire new values when allled with metal.

Clothes For Sport
Rust-brown. sage-green, belge, or
grey are correct colours for sports clothes. Tallors have been active preparing for the opening of the shooting season and new "ensem- bles" are made chiefly from Bri- tish 'tweeds. Hand-knitted pull- overs and blouses of fine woollen jersey go with these tweeds and elther match them exactly or form sharp colour contrasts.

One of these has fine stripes in multi-colours, and ́an- other u sugar-stick stripe on a plain material. A peacock's tail feather gives the design for an- other. Bayadere lamé with the stripes woven in the metal is a. survival of a popular spring material, and in a new colour range is being used for cocktall dresses to be worn under fur coats; on a brown ground this is an effective material with mink or Kolinsky. Lamé moire is also good this season, "as there have been improvements in its manu- facture which prevent, the metal thread from breaking. A chintz- chene lamé is another interesting metal material.
Some of the inost admired dresses seen at the parades have been in lacquered satin; these were the slender tobular, backless dresses with the curved bodice- line and with losse panels on the skirt, lined in the dominant shade of the lacquered patten. This note of a coloured lining is also seen in some of the plain duchesse satins which have a colour re- verse. Most of the evening skirts are raised in front, which allows such "double" materials to show their quality. One designer uses sil sating in severe lines, gather- ed into the waist like a peasant's skirt. Lacquered panne ¡B this year, and on a black ground with red flying fish it is amusing. An embossed black velvet powder- ed with gold is а novelty, and there is a Batik printed panne in vivid gipay stripes that would make broad scarves, and would be par- ticularly good on the stage. New Jersey silks are in a mousse sur- face, and are specially good for draped dresses.

The short white silk blouse is altached to the plain skirt, and Ita szondi collár is worn on the out- side of the long-slooved jacket which has large tucks at the shoulder. Highlighting the outfit le a silk cord; stitched together in rows to forte wide belt, tied in a single strand and ending in loops to forni tassels.
tweed consist of tallormades or long coats and skirts, with which are worn jumpers of hand-knitted tweed wool in the same colours as those of the woven fabrics.
Colours may be contrasted in sports clothes and Creed studies colour "ersembles" which are suit able for the moors. A grey leather three-quarter coat lined with green and belge plaid goes well with a soft green duvyteen skirt and a grey jersey blouse. A woollen starf of the same plaid material which lines the coat may be tled over the hair instead of a hat..
