OCTOBER HANDICAP,

This is the classic race of the day and though the field may not be a big one, it will be more than accounted for by the quality that will be on view. Bear Claw" has been lotted top weight but I -understand will not be accepting. learing the Dunbar interests to be represented by Wild Life and Diana Bay, both of which are Equally capable of annexing the honours. King's Warder will once again furnish the opposition and will certainly be one of them fight- ing out the finish. The Sasscon colours will be carried by Honey- moon Eve. It is rumoured, while Happy Eve. this year's Derby win- per will in all probability be kept In the stable. Cossack's Beauty

CANBERRA HANDICAP.

In spite of rumours to the effect that Strathroy is not accepting due to some skin allment, I feel that the connections will ultimately saddle him for this event in order to get the required number of "starts" necessary to qualify for the Queensland Autumn Cham- plers. This brown champlon Is in tair condition and will probably be fully extended by Lancashire

Chips. This

chestnut has only

141 lbs to carry and in view of some very créditable past perform ences with 155 lbs, or thereabouts. is certain to run Strathroy close. Able Amazon should run well tspr etally if a good jockey can be had .Lt 135 lbs. The other entries, with the possible exception of Gypsy Love and Electron. I am af the opinion. will have but little chance against the three ponies I have mentioned.

NATHAN HANDICAP. There is nothing really outstand- ing in this 1 mile race for "B" Class China ponies. Potentate ap- pears to be the fittest amongst the entries at the time of writing and may repeat läst fortnight's success though the distance is a Ilttle against him. The other Eu Tong Sen candidate, Rose Queen, should secure a place with the opposition coming mainly from Dawn Star and Havoc Eve.

JORDAN HANDICAP (SECOND SECTION).

Another good finish should be witnessed in this race from the two mile post once round and in for "D" Class China ponies. On paper I like the chances of Stop- watch though this diminutive bay has 162 lbs. to look after and may And it a little beyond him. Coro- nation Day If well handled and kept in check carly on, may spring a surprise here but probably Marl- Dosa would be the one to follow as this animal is very game and re- sponds well under pressure. Ship- master, National Anthem. Tempest and King'a Parade, are all capable of giving of their best, and may cause the above mentioned porles some worry ame

WOODERSON'S WORLD RECORD FOR

THE MILE

S. C. Wooderson, the Blackheath Harrier and British champion, ran A superb mile In 4min, 6.4sec. and so brought back the world's record to this country after 22 years. writes, Home correspondent.

Was this achievement a high- water mark in Wooderson's track career? He is young just 23 -he is really keen on his running, and he is in the extremely capable hands of Albert Hill. The day's weather conditions were perfect;

Six thousand people watched this remarkable, feat-as great aso was the track. bit of running as I have ever seen--- In a specially framed handicap, at Motspur Park,

I can state authoritatively, that Wooderson's time was 4min, 6.4sec. and note 4min. 6.8see. as published during the week-end.

Wooderson was timed by four watches, three of which registered 4min. 6.4sec., a fourth watch showed 4mih. 8.8sec., but this one had not been certified as correct. The track was re-surveyed after- wards, and there seems to be no doubt that the record will be recog- nised.

RAPID FIRST LAP Nevertheless. I fully expect side 4min. 4sec. before he ends his Wooderson to get somewhere in-

running days. Almost certainly he would have clipped a whole second off his time but for a much too rapid first laáp.

KATOOMBA HANDICAP. Roolfly was judged by many to be a trifle unlucký in his last out- ing and should make amends in the same class when they meet in the "C" Class Australian race over one mile. Twilight Star has al ways been thereabouts and in view
