ADDRESS

TO HONG KONG ROTARIANS.

An address of more than usual interest on "learning of Chinese without tears," as the speaker expressed it, was given by Pro- fessor Erwin Reiffer, Doctor of Political Science of the University of Vienna, Professor of Chiaotung University of Shanghai, at the weekly timin meeting of the Hong Kong Rotary Club yesterday at the Hong Kong Hotel.

Professor Reifer, during and mostly at the end of the talk. took great pains to explain the symbolic nature of the Chinese characters by ocular demonstrations on the blackboard, and show- ed the audience how easy it was it remember the characters.

According to Professor Reifler there is apparently a super- stition in China that the English only learn foreign languages with great difficulty. This superstition, which was quite contrary to facts, had done much harm, he said. Some of the greatest sinologues had been English people and had written excellent text-books, dictionaries and standard translation of the Chinese language.

ENGLISH AND CHINESE Besides this, there are

many

similarities between the English and the Chinese language. Take for instance the sequence of words in a simple sentence, which is the

same in both languages.

But its the Chinese characters which all foreigners Bre really afraid of. And why? Because the old China-bands usually tell the young China-hands the fairy-tale of the many Chinese characters one has to learn. That is com-

pletely wrong. Though the famous Chinese dictionary of Emperor Kanghsi has about 40.000 char-

certainly have more than 100,000 words.

In English we say: "I eat rice."acters, the largest English diction and the Chinese say just the same, arles whereas the Japanese say: "I the rice the eat" (the word "the" follows each noun). Thus, we already re- cognise the fact that Chinese is more closely related than Japanese to English. The simplicity of the grammar, furthermore, shows many parallels in English and Chinese. And while the German and the French usually say: "A such man," the Chinese say exactly like the English: "Such a man"!

SIMILAR PSYCHOLOGY While in the Japanese language the preposition follows the noun and the conjunction follow the de-

COMPLICATED CHARACTERS Maybe there are some more of this kind, but I think, they are the most important cases. Generally we can say that everything that has made you think, that has made you astonished, that you and un- believable, that you find offensive or that has made you laugh to death, you won't forget for your whole life.

These means must, therefore, be extensively used, especially for the teaching of languages, which other. wise can be very dry.

I shall show you, now a few of the more complicated characters. and ask you will try to explain them to me. But before you do this I want to give you two secret hinta: Whenever you want to ex- plain a Chinese character, try to make all upright elements lie down, and secondly make as far as possi- ble all straight lines round, be- cause the old forms were round as far as it was compatible with the original form of the object depicted by the pictographs.

Ugly complexion faults woman's most common enemy. Few escape.

Some resort to heavy powdering in an effort to hide them. Whilst others, due to consistent wrong treatment, cause the skin to become highly sensitive, coarse and blemished.
