The air raid alarm was sounded shortly after noon but no Japanese planes appeared over the city but a reliable Chinese source states that seven planes dropped ten bombs in Wham- poa causing damage to number of huts and the casualties in- cluded a Chinese woman who had just given birth to a child. Both were killed instantly. Passengers on the morning train from Hong Kong had a mild thrill in the vicinity of Shekpal when a warning was given and the majority of passengers, in- cluding many foreigners, took refuge under trees on the country side. A Chinese spokesman announced that for strategic reasons Chinese troops along the Lotien and Liahang highway had withdrawn a short distance without a hitch.
