BY E.R.E.
The present blockade of the South China coast by the Japanese fleet should by now have given the authorities of the Colony, civil, military and naval, as well as the Imperial Government, food for a great deal of very serious thought:
Supposing for a moment that Great Britain, were at war with f great Pacific Power. The magnitude of the defences being erected In this Colony may be taken to mean that Hong Kong, as the first point of possible attack, is getting ready to defend herself to the utmost. In the event of war there would certainly "be", a "great" strengthening of military as well aë naval units here.
In these circumstances, I picture Hong Kong ing a pretty sorry „plight," because, wonderfully endowed by nature as this Colony 13, and despite the years of warning of the perilous position in which she would find herself in the event of hostilities, our leaders have not had the vision, one might even bluntly say, the common sense. to make provison for man's most essential need, namely, food."

I discussed this matter yesterday with that great American agricul- tural authority, Major Howard Reed, who is now in Hong Kong and he was emphatic that in the New Territories Hong Kong has a vast tract of land ideally, sulted for the growing of every type of agricultural produce to meet the needs of the million inhabitants of this Colony without having to de- pend in the slightest on outside

Passengers To Kowloon From Canton
There has been a striking fall- ing off in the number of passen- gers arriving by train from Canton within the past two days. Major R. D Walker, General Manager of the Kowloon-Canton Railway, told the "Dally Press" yesterday, that only about 1.200 passengers were now arriving per day, This, he said, was about 50 per cent of the normal traffic.
